Exploring the Challenges of FTC Season 2024-2025: INTO THE DEEP

Introduction

In the "Into the Deep" competition, two alliances, each made up of two FIRST Tech Challenge teams, compete in matches that involve various challenges. Teams use robots to score points by completing specific tasks, including moving objects called "Samples" and "Specimens," parking in designated zones, and ascending rungs on a structure known as the "Submersible."

Match Structure

Each match follows a structured timeline, with cycles running between 6-10 minutes per field. The breakdown of each match includes:

  • Pre-match setup

  • 30-second autonomous period (AUTO): Robots operate without driver control.

  • 8-second transition period

  • 2-minute teleoperated period (TELEOP): Drivers take control of the robots.

  • Post-match reset

During the match, robots score points by placing Samples into baskets or positioning Specimens on chambers. Robots can also earn points by parking in the Observation Zone or ascending the Submersible's rungs.

Drive Team Roles

Each team has a Drive Team consisting of up to four members:

  • Drive Coach: An advisor or guide for the team.

  • Drivers: Two students who operate and control the robot.

  • Human Player: A student responsible for managing scoring elements.

At least three members must be students, and one member may be a non-student acting as the Drive Coach.

Field Setup and Scoring Elements

Before each match, the field staff stages scoring elements:

  • Samples: 80 Samples, including red, blue, and neutral colors, are placed on designated tiles and within the Submersible Zone.

  • Clips: 40 Clips are positioned outside the field wall.

Robots can be preloaded with either one Sample or one Specimen. Any remaining elements stay in their setup locations.

Robot Setup and Drive Team Staging

Drive teams must set up their robots and operator consoles before the match begins. Teams are required to position themselves in the designated Alliance Area, ensuring proper placement of scoring elements and correct initialization of their robots.

Scoring and Points System

The match rewards teams with two types of points:

  • Match Points: Awarded for in-match achievements like parking in zones, scoring Samples in baskets, and ascending the Submersible's rungs.

  • Ranking Points (RP): Given for winning or tying matches.

Key scoring tasks include:

  • Parking in the Observation Zone.

  • Scoring Samples in baskets or the Net Zone.

  • Placing Specimens on the Chamber.

  • Ascending Rungs of the Submersible, with points awarded based on how high the robot ascends.

For example, parking in the Observation Zone earns 3 points, while ascending to the third level of the Submersible earns up to 30 points.

Penalties and Violations

Teams must follow strict rules during gameplay. Violations can lead to penalties such as:

  • Minor fouls (5 points added to the opponent's score)

  • Major fouls (15 points to the opponent's score)

  • Yellow Cards and Red Cards: Issued for serious rule violations or improper behavior, potentially leading to disqualification.

INTO THE DEEP

The "Into the Deep" game provides a thrilling platform for teams to compete using strategy, teamwork, and advanced robotics. With a complex point system, strict rules, and diverse challenges, the competition encourages technical innovation and sportsmanship while fostering a competitive spirit among participants.
